environmental behavior change

Our Mission

Promoting widespread commitments to green behaviors and personal health through an interactive online platform.

By combining social networking with environmental psychology research, we can build a comprehensive website that makes healthy living and going green enjoyable for people of all ages.

Sample depiction of interactive website Visitors, especially those who are fairly new to green behaviors, are encouraged to select among commitments presented in a clear, straightforward, and visually appealing manner. Usability is paramount. Providing intrinsic rewards, such as visualizing one's accomplishments, is one key to the program's long-term durability. Mutual support is another proven motivator. The site encourages team location and formation. Interfacing with existing networks and local resources helps participants feel ownership of their commitments, rather than behaving out of guilt toward a vague concern. Enjoyment is key! Competition helps motivate behaviors as well. Areas of focus include energy efficiency, alternative transportation, renewable energy, resource usage, food choices, and consumer behaviors. Since the project operates electronically, it can reach many people and operate for years without substantial future funding. Annual publication of our findings will deliver this information in helpful and specific ways, serving as a model and providing guidance for future efforts.
